What is grief ?

What is grief? Grief is the uncontrollable and
natural reaction to the death of someone to
whom you feel connected or attached. Your
relationship may have felt secure (loving,
respectful), or insecure (ambivalent,
unpredictable). Either way, when you feel
connected to someone, you will experience
grief after their death.

The grieving process
Grieving is not the same for everyone. Some handle it very well and some feel like they cannot cope with it. It hits some people immediately and others may feel it's effects weeks or even months later.

The standard stages of grief are:
1. Shock - initial effect of hearing the bad news.
2. Denial - trying to avoid the inevitable.
3. Anger - frustrated outpouring of emotion.
4. Bargaining - seeking in vain for a way out.
5. Depression - final realization of the inevitable.
6. Testing - seeking realistic solutions.
7. Acceptance - finally finding the way forward.

Grief counseling
Rest Assured will help any family member who is struggling with their own grieving process. San Juan County has many local counselors who are very capable of assisting in this process.
